Driver Fitting
Ninety-eight percent of all men's drivers these days are built to a "standard" length of 45 or 45.5 inches, and a 45-inch driver will not fit 90 percent of all golfers and will never allow them to achieve their best combination of distance AND accuracy.
Let's put it another way. Tiger Woods has swung a 43.5-inch driver for most of his career on tour. If he could hit the ball straight with a 45-inch club, he would. He can't, so he doesn't. And he knows if he did use a longer driver, he'd have even more trouble keeping it in play. The average driver length for all the other pros on the PGA Tour today is 44.5 inches.
Since we've began fitting in the Swing Studio, there has been a noticable demand for golfers to use more lofted drivers. The trick here however is to ensure that the correct shaft is selected to compliment the loft. This combination if correct, will lead to a higher launch angle and the ball taking off with the optimum amount of backspin. This will then produce a ball flight that can be described as a similar shape to a rainbow. The higher loft also makes the driver much easier to hit consistently off the sweet spot and straighter.
There is a definite misunderstanding that a lower loft will lead to more distance.......not true!! Think of it this way, if a ball stays in the air longer and given that there is not an excessive amount of backspin.....it will definitely fly further than a ball flighted lower and hitting the ground sooner.. Also worth noting, is that the lower the loft the amount of sidespin is also increased dramatically. For example, a golfer that slices his driver yet hits his 3-wood a lot straighter and can't understand why? The answer......Most likely a driver with not enough loft.
Iron Fitting
Fitting for irons works in a similar way to the driver in relation to head type and shaft. We firstly like to find the head type which offers the golfer most forgiveness, and a clubhead the the golfer likes the look and feel of most importantly. From there, we then fit for lie and length. The length of the club will mainly determine where on the clubface the ball is struck, too short will result in strikes near the heel, too long will result in strikes scattered around the face giving no accuracy or consistency.
The lie of the club will largely influence direction. No matter what a golfer does at address, if the clubs are too upright or too flat there is nothing the golfer can do to effect or change that fact. Too flat will result in the toe of the club digging in the ground at impact and the ball traveling right, and too upright will result in the heel digging in and turning the ball left.

After the ball is struck, the Vector Launch Monitor combines all the data it has received ( ball speed, clubhead speed, launch angle, landing angle, backspin, sidespin and whether the shot has been pushed or pulled) and gives a rating or score out of 100. A good fitting is a club that gives a score of around 80, or higher if possible. The information screen will then give a shot distance, and recommend whether the launch angle higher or lower, or whether the spin rate needs to be higher or lower to give greater distance.
